The 2024 spring season comes to an end for the YHS boys’ varsity tennis team, who finished 2nd in the league after an outstanding season. Finishing with 11 wins and just 3 losses, the team and the coach feel that the team performed well. “Two of our losses were very close (both 4-3), or we could have come in first in the league,” stated Coach Dayer. “The team had a very good year overall.”
Going into the new season, the tennis team had to make several adjustments in the squad since last year. New players replaced the seniors who left after their last season, while the others who were already on varsity retained their spot on the team. Seniors Aiden Hirsch and George Whalen took on the role of co-captaining the team. The squad had faith in pursuing a successful season before it began. “We’re enthusiastic about our new season,” stated George Whalen. Michael Munson also added, “Our goal is to win, which we know we can do if we play our best.”
The season kicked off with a home scrimmage against Croton on March 27. In the following weeks, the team moved on to win 11 games and lose only 3. The team showed strong performances throughout the season, even through its losses, which were all very narrow. The most difficult match for the Yorktown Huskers was an away game at Fox Lane, one of the strongest teams in the league. The team showed great resilience throughout the match, putting up a strong performance against well-composed opponents, narrowly losing 4-3.
Overall, the YHS varsity boys’ tennis team and the coach felt that they had performed well throughout the season. The team showed fighting spirit throughout each match, and in such a competitive league managed a 2nd place finish.
