Spring Break in Siberia!

Spring Break in Siberia!

Sad that winter is over? Why not spend your spring break in Siberia, where the average spring temperature is about 5°F in some locations and the nice cool breeze is strong enough to knock you off your feet? It’s the perfect climate for tourism and family fun!

Here are a few reasons why you should visit this Russian paradise:

1. Natural Wonders

If you hear a local yelling “водяной тигр” (“water tiger”) or “речной волк” (“river wolf”), be scared. They are either referring to an actual tiger/wolf or even worse, the taimen fish. While taimen are in the salmonid family, don’t underestimate their prowess. The 66lb fish will instantly devour a beaver and may easily crush your hopes and dreams. However, if you are able to catch one, it will make a fun family moment for your photo album!

2. Man-Made Wonders

Wondering what the technological force behind Russia’s dominance looks like? Well, look no further than Siberia. Luckily, this wondrous innovation is located conveniently only a few hundred miles from the arctic circle in the coldest city in the world, Oymyakon. So, what exactly is the said innovation? It’s the heating plant in Oymyakon of course! The heating plant is a must-see in Siberia because it keeps the city’s whopping 500 inhabitants breathing. In addition, the plant releases a mystical plume of smoke into the sky at all times, another great background for a family photo. Just make sure you plan out the logistics of your photo- you don’t want to take longer than a minute unless you want to become an ice sculpture!

3. Sports

Missing the greens back at home? Miss no more! The Siberian terrain is perfect for golf- or at least a version of it. You’ve heard of ice hockey and field hockey, but have you ever heard of ice golf? With nearly 4 million square miles of frozen subsoil and an abundance of frozen lakes to serve as “whites”, Siberia is an ice golfing paradise. Surprisingly, the rules of ice golf are almost exactly the same as the rules of grass golf; simply hit the ball into the hole but try not to get frostbite in the process!

4. Wholesome Cuisine

Siberia has many wholesome food options available that are sure to keep you full and craving more. Siberian cuisine is full of variety, ranging from Zagutai and Raskolotka, two raw fish variations, to fish fat and fish roll delicacies. You can even bring home the gift of a cold smoked omul fish to your dearest loved one! And don’t forget about the ice pops, which you’ll be able to conjure up in an instant! With so much variety, you will surely find something different to try for every meal- unless you are vegetarian, in which case you may have to settle for just the ice pops.

Even if you are concerned about COVID-19, Siberia has you covered! With an average population density of 8 people per square mile, you are sure to be properly distanced from other humans. So, given the beautiful climate and accommodating cuisine, you are guaranteed to have a healthy, comfortable stay.
