The Somers vs. Yorktown rivalry is an ongoing huge competition between the two neighboring towns. This rivalry goes beyond just sports but the biggest rivalries come from the sports teams. The high schools share a huge history of competitive athletes. Throughout many years, both schools developed strong athletic programs in sports mainly like football, soccer, basketball, and lacrosse.
Games between Yorktown and Somers draw large crowds and bring everyone excitement. The intense competition brings high-level performances from both teams. Focusing on girls’ lacrosse, both schools have strong lacrosse programs, and the games are usually close in score and hard-fought battles. Numerous players on both teams are continuing their lacrosse careers at the next level in college.
In last year’s match-up against Yorktown vs. Somers girls’ lacrosse, Yorktown lost to Somers by a goal. This year, Yorktown got to play Somers on their senior night and played their hearts out. Yorktown came hungry for a win and grabbed an early 3-0 lead before the Tuskers played it even on the scoreboard from there on out.
In LoHud’s article, Yorktown’s coach, Heather Raniolo, was pleased by how her healthy kids on the team had successfully overcome the absence of several key players on their team, including three of the team’s four captains who usually make a significant difference. Not having those players was a tough thought for everyone entering this huge game, but the girls didn’t let that affect their performance. They stepped up and won the game 8-5.
Specifically this year, the younger girls on the team made a huge difference on the field. Freshman Annie Cuneen finished the game with four goals. Freshman Lily Diaz added two goals to that. Their ability to adapt to the field without D1 star players Reese Bruno and Reileigh McEnroe was incredible.
The rivalry between Somers and Yorktown in sports is fueled by many things like our proximity, historical competitiveness, and each town’s pride. These big games bring out the best in both teams and put on a great game for everyone to watch.
