On the beautiful morning of Saturday, April 27, 2024, the Yorktown girls varsity softball team took the YHS field to show Rye’s softball team who’s boss. With the final score being 17-5, I’d say that the Yorktown team did more than just secure their win!
While the warm sun was shining down, both of the teams got ready for their game, putting on their team’s hats, mitts, and picking up their bats. They first warm up by doing stretching exercises for their legs, tossing the ball to each other which stretches out their arms, anything they can do to prepare their muscles for the game. The coach follows up by giving the team an encouraging pep talk going over their game strategy. The home team leaves the dugout and takes the field and the game has begun!
Now that the Yorktown team has run out onto the field, having three players in the outfield waiting for the ball, the pitcher steps up to the plate as a player from the visiting team steps up as the batter. The pitcher starts off the game with a strong and powerful throw which is then hit by the batter and sent flying into the outfield. As the ball is soaring through the air it is then caught by a Yorktown outfielder who throws it to the infielder. As you can see, Yorktown was off to a great start.
Soon after, number 5 or Eva Destito steps up for her turn as a batter. She doesn’t disappoint as she hits the ball far into the blue sky, sending it flying across the field. The crowd’s cheering grew louder and louder as this allowed for more players to run across all the bases and score for Yorktown!
Another great play by Sienna Katzenberg was when Sienna hit the ball, sending it gliding across the sky and field for seemingly forever. This then allotted tons of time for her teammates to run on the bases into the dugout, also contributing to the massive gap in the score between Rye and Yorktown.
Inning after inning, the Yorktown team dominated on the field and at the batter’s box. Although Rye had some great plays, Yorktown continued to score on Rye over and over.
