The Influence of the Beckhams

The Influence of the Beckhams

When you think about Victoria and David Beckham, many may just think about a singer and a soccer player.

However, ‘Posh’ and ‘Becks’ have had a major impact on pop culture. David Beckham’s new documentary called, Beckham, gave viewers an insight into the lives behind the cameras during David’s ‘fútbol’ stardom in the early nineties and on. A professional soccer player marrying a Spice Girl is iconic in the eyes of many fans. As David and Victoria’s fame grew, scandals, hardships, and struggles came about.

Above all, two new fashion icons were born and began to be seen all over television, magazine covers, and were ambushed by paparazzi wherever they went. In 1992, David Beckham was seventeen years old and joined the team, Manchester United. He was excited about playing with a team he had loved, but what he didn’t know was that he was about to make history in the soccer and pop culture world.

The four episode documentary on Netflix starts by showing David’s career taking off during his 1996-1997 season. During one particular game, David was playing it safe and didn’t go against Manchester United’s manager, Sir Alex Ferguson’s wishes. Eventually, when David got hold of the ball, he decided to just kick the ball. “Why not?” As the ball was flying through the air for a few seconds, the stands full of people went silent. When the ball made it into the goal, uproars of fans grew and grew. That’s when Beckham grew into a soccer sensation. After this life-changing goal, many people started to view Beckham as a star. This goal led to many newspaper articles and the press talking about him and who he was.

This documentary goes deep into the ups and downs of David Beckham’s soccer career until his retirement in 2013. All four parts of the documentary series go into depth about Beckham’s time on each of the teams he’s played for. The first episode dives into the depression David Beckham faced as he received a red card in the 1998 World Cup for hitting the player Diego Simeone. The second episode explores deep into the death threats and hate being thrown onto David Beckham, affecting his family life and how he played. As the documentary continues, David and Victoria face having to balance their social life and their family as both of them grow.

David soon moved to Madrid and caused strain on Victoria and her kids’ education. One of my favorite parts of the documentary is seeing Victoria and David’s impact on 90’s culture. When David received his first paycheck, he bought fancy clothes and, later on, a Porsche. Although this documentary is focused on soccer, the Beckhams’ family life and clothing impact is my favorite to see.

Victoria Beckham being Posh Spice and marrying David Beckham was just perfect. They complimented each other greatly. Cartier watches, perfectly fit clothes, and designer bags were everything that the media wanted to see.

When Victoria Beckham and her friend, Melanie Chisholm, also known as Sporty Spice, went to one of David’s soccer games, David knew he was going to marry Posh Spice even before they had their first conversation. In January of 1998, when David and Victoria got engaged, it was announced to the media like a royal wedding. Hundreds of photos taken of Victoria wearing her large ring were iconic for the media.

Throughout the years, there have been hundreds of photos of the two in luxurious outfits that essentially defined the 90s. The only people to pull off getting married in a purple suit and purple dress, wearing Louis Vuitton in airports, and sporting cheetah dresses while still managing to stay posh were this couple: this defined the David and Victoria way.

Their fashion is still looked at today and is now even more highlighted with their new documentary. Their photos in the 90s and 2000s are still being resurfaced on every social media platform there is. Their relevance in fashion, sports and entertainment is impeccable.

The final episode shows what David and Victoria are doing presently. David owns his own soccer team, Inter Miami CF, while Victoria owns her own makeup and clothing line. The last episode has the impact to hit viewers with a sentimental feeling. Through every hard time the two faced, they overcame it. If you’re lucky, you’ll be able to dance in the kitchen listening to “Islands In The Stream” with your whole family, just like the Beckhams.
