Faculty Feud: Hit Or Miss?

YHS Senate held the second annual Faculty Feud event this April. This highly anticipated event is YHS’s live game show where teachers compete to see who really knows the student body best, and it has proven to be a hit among students and faculty alike. Here are the top 5 reasons why this event was such a success.

  1. The Student Body Loves Their Teachers!

This year’s Faculty Feud featured more teachers than ever, with three teams competing for the title. The Bowtie Bombers, led by Mr. Levine, faced off against the cleverly titled Shawshank Redemption, led of course by Mr. Shaw. The winning team then faced the returning champions, the Hot Sheets, led by the one and only Mr. Kennedy. With so many teachers competing from every subject area and whose students are in every grade, you’d be hard-pressed to find a student at YHS without somebody to root for. People showed up in droves to support their favorite faculty members, from teachers to guidance counselors to everyone’s beloved cafeteria worker, Ms. Joyce. Needless to say, no student left Faculty Feud at all disappointed.

  1. The Polls Were On Point

As you may be aware, the original game show Family Feud conducts polls of random populations and then tests whether contestants can guess the most popular answers to various questions. To replicate this, YHS’s Faculty Feud surveyed actual YHS students on everything from our cafeteria’s best food to which teacher is most likely to take over the Italy trip. Attending this event truly felt like being in on a huge inside joke that everybody could be a part of. In terms of school camaraderie and spirit, Faculty Feud is far more inviting and all-encompassing than many other events our school holds.

  1. Lots of enthusiasm!!!

From the moment the event started, with teachers running in from the back of the auditorium, screaming, chanting, and waving flags of Mr. Shaw’s face, the audience was made aware that they were about to witness something truly special. Featuring witty commentary and “zings” from the night’s emcee, Mr. Miller, this high-energy evening of fun was truly one to remember.

  1. Advertising, Advertising, Advertising!

Predictably, the largest determining factor in the outcome of an event is how well it is advertised. As was the case last year, the two newcomer teams’ members were announced one at a time daily on the YHS Senate Instagram (@yhs__senate). This built suspense and excitement around the participating teachers, with teachers’ doors even getting decorated with personalized banners as they were announced. When asked about the decision to pick two entirely new teams and continue the hype of the returning champion team, Devin Carrig, Vice President of the Senate and one of the primary event planners, commented “We always knew we wanted last year’s stars to come back. But we also wanted to make sure that we kept the event feeling fresh and exciting with new faculty members.” This slow build-up of anticipation around the new and returning contestants was the perfect way of achieving this excitement.

  1. Student Participation In the Extreme

As if all this build-up were not enough, this year’s Faculty Feud featured a brand new element – a raffle was held, open to all YHS seniors. The prize? Competing on one of the teams with faculty for a chance to win a free ticket to prom. The selected students, Adam Rothenberg and Greg Dalietos, both brought energy, enthusiasm, and some useful knowledge of the student body to their teams. Sadly, the winning team, the Hot Sheets, were the returning champs and did not have a student contestant. However, the student that ultimately ended up going furthest, Greg, won the coveted prize for helping take his team, the Bowtie Bombers, as far as they went. When asked what the most memorable part of the night was, he said “Definitely winning the prom ticket. I’m so glad my team and I were able to make that goal happen and it was overall just a really special moment.” Including these students as a part of this event not only provided a peer for the audience to root for but also created lifelong memories for these two contestants.

…So?

Faculty Feud was truly a resounding success, from the planning and commitment to the infectious enthusiasm of everybody involved. The YHS Senate worked tirelessly to make this event what it was. To quote Senate Vice President Devin, “It shows off our students’ amazing ability to connect faculty members and students in a way that has never been done before.” This sentiment, this connection of people on an entirely unprecedented scale, was the true appeal of the second annual Faculty Feud. “Also,” comments student contestant Greg, “having Mr. Miller host couldn’t have hurt.”
