YHS Science Olympians Continue to Dominate as Hudson Valley Champions

Back-to-back champions!

For the second consecutive year, the Yorktown High School’s Science Olympiad team has secured the Lower Hudson Valley Regional Championship, emerging victorious among 48 competing teams. This remarkable achievement propels them once again to the New York State competition. The state tournament will be held on March 15-16 at Le Moyne College in Syracuse. The Lower Hudson Valley Regional Champions competed on February 10 at Byram Hills High School in more than 22 testing, building, and lab events, pertaining to various fields of science, including earth science, biology, chemistry, physics, and engineering.

Earth science teacher, Mr. Agosta, and chemistry teacher, Mr. Downing, were the dedicated coaches for the team and are especially proud as the team won first place not just once, but twice, proudly representing Yorktown in an exceptionally competitive region. Mr. Agosta commended the “hard-working and driven nature of all the team members” He is especially proud of the team’s exceptional performance and commendable morale despite several challenges encountered during the competition.

Reflecting on the event, Mr. Downing recalls how, “There were undoubtedly many ups and downs during the competition, but what truly matters is the team’s ability to overcome these obstacles and persevere.”

Now, the spotlight is on the state competition to be held in Syracuse. Unfortunately, a significant portion of the team will be unable to attend the state competition due to conflicts with the regional science research competition (WESEF). Acknowledging this, Mr. Agosta candidly expresses his sentiments, recognizing it as a loss for the team. Despite this setback, hopes are pinned on the potential of the younger Science Olympians to rise to the occasion and uphold the team’s legacy with a strong showing at the state competition.

The journey for the Yorktown High School Science Olympians continues, with their sights firmly set on the state tournament scheduled for March.  We wish them the best of luck at the state tournament and look forward to seeing their continued success.
