Most people wouldn’t expect a 17 year old to be attending college, let alone be recognized as the #1 prospect in all of college basketball. Cooper Flagg, a name that has recently gained the highest level of prominence in the basketball world, is one of the most exciting young prospects in the sport today. At just 17 years old, Flagg is already being considered a generational talent, with the potential to be an all-time great. Already being compared to Hall of Famers such as Kevin Garnett and Kevin McHale, Flagg’s journey to dominating the NBA is just beginning.
When Was The Beginning?
Born on December 21, 2006, in Newport, Maine, Cooper Flagg grew up surrounded by basketball. His father, Chris Flagg, was a former college basketball player, and his twin brother, Ace Flagg, played alongside Cooper for years. With basketball having an early influence on him, Flagg was destined to be a talented athlete. And of course, by the time he reached high school, it was clear that he had that special talent. He truly made a name for himself during his high school career at both Nokomis Regional High School and Montverde Academy, where his performances quickly drew the attention of scouts and analysts. However, his national breakthrough came in 2023 when he played for the United States’ U19 team at the FIBA World Cup. His team-leading 10 rebounds per game helped lead the US to 4th place in the tournament.
All Strength, No Weakness
Cooper Flagg stands at 6’8″ and is an athletic phenom for his age. Setting him apart from other players, his game has no weaknesses as he imposes an impressive blend of size, skill, and basketball IQ. But while he is often praised for his offensive ability, his defense has contributed the most to his success. He’s a shot-blocker, rebounder, and perimeter defender, capable of guarding any position or size. His lengthy frame combined with his agility allow him to contest shots at the highest rate whether it’s in the paint or beyond the 3-point line. “Cooper Flagg is one of the most unique defenders I’ve seen in a long time,” says NBA analyst and former player, Richard Jefferson. “He’s able to cover so much ground on the floor, and his ability to impact the game without even scoring is a sign of a player who can contribute at an elite level.”
Current Hype
As a result of his success, Flagg’s name has been at the top of draft boards for the 2025 NBA Draft, even though he is still a teenager. Currently averaging 17 points per game in college for one of the most prestigious programs in the nation, Duke, Flagg’s case for becoming a future all-star has only been getting stronger. NBA Hall of Famer Charles Barkley spoke highly of Flagg’s potential in a recent interview, saying, “If he continues to develop the way he’s been playing, Cooper Flagg will be a top player in the NBA. He’s got a rare combination of skills and intangibles that most players don’t have at his age.” Even with the amount of hype that has surrounded Flagg through fans, analysts, and the entirety of social media, he has proven so far that he can play under high expectations.
The Road Ahead
Flagg seems to be speeding down a road that is usually much more difficult for others. But for now, he claims to be focused on continuing to improve and prepare for what comes at him next. “I’m just taking it one step at a time,” Flagg says. “I know the journey is long, but I’m willing to put in the work and keep getting better every day.” As the 2025 NBA Draft creeps upon us, Cooper Flagg’s name will be the most prominent name to follow. Whether he goes to a highly marketable team like the San Antonio Spurs, or a team yearning for young talent like the Washington Wizards, Cooper Flagg is a player you’ll want to keep an eye on for years to come.
